Forest Drawings

The Forest Drawings are plein air drawings made in a large wood next to my home. My interest in making these drawings reflects the primary focus of my artistic practice: the nature of communication.

In forest settings trees are very social beings. They communicate with each other directly and actively participate in symbiotic relationships with other species. My drawings seek to tease out the dynamics within the immediate environment in order to sense communications happening in front of me. My drawings record sessions of patient listening and intense looking.

A side note: Each drawing session lasts between 3 and 4 hours. I sit quietly in off-trail locations and do not move much. As a result, I am frequently approached by deer, foxes, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and other woodland animals … a real perk to the day when it happens.
