The Confessional Paintings focus on how images use codes to simultaneously expose and conceal source material. Continuing with earlier efforts in image coding, these pictures start with a selected text-based theme and then fill out the picture with color/gray-scale coded ‘texts’ - texts that are highly personal reflections related to the theme. The pictures’ compositions are intentionally more ‘pictoral’ than previous work- an examination of the connection between the tradition of allegorical image making and the subtle expressions of veiled, private thoughts.
