Each Monument is comprised of a stack of colored fabric book boxes, designating one of the eight main characters in Genet's Querelle de Brest. Physical books have been entombed inside each fabric-wrapped book box, sealed as if in a time capsule. The titles of the entombed books describe some aspect of the title character's personality and the colored fabric selection 'spells' out the character's name (according to a 'chromatic vocabulary'); hence, each stacked set of book boxes comprise a biographical monument to the particular character. A framed listing of the entombed books are usually hung nearby.
