Jean Paul Sartre examines Jean Genet's life and works in the book, Saint Genet. His chapter on Genet's aesthetics is entitled 'A Strange Hell of Beauty'.  In these paintings, I have transcribed (in layers) the text from this chapter but have created a 'voided screen' as an overlay.  These overlays of loosely organized grids are intended to act as aesthetic filter that superimposes its own presence and 'rules' over the transcribed text; thereby emphasizing our tendency to filter our visual experiences through personally held aesthetic preferences.
